Wanderlist: 8 things to do/see in Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver: The Canadian Frontier, the land of the Olympics and North Hollywood, as well as inspiration for many great Canadian artists. Surrounded by ocean and mountains, its perfect mild climate seems to be THE place to see all year round. It even is ranked in the top 5 worldwide cities for quality of life. It’s no wonder that while travelling abroad, everyone thought of Vancouver when I said I was from Canada.

In fact, I discovered I have seen more of the world than my own country. By the end of the summer I hope to change that, so here are 8 Must-Sees of Vancouver, British Columbia.

(Besides I want to know why all my friends are moving there.)

VANCOUVER ART GALLERY

As some of you know, I am an art nerd, and wherever I go I have to see at least one museum. This one just so happens to home of some of the great Canadian artists such as Emily Carr and the Group of Seven. Plus it seems to be a great meeting spot for many rallies and protests, so maybe I’ll get to see a real movement in action.

GROUSE MOUNTAIN

During the summer you can hitch on the Mountains cable car up the mountain to see the view of greater Vancouver area from above. What would be cooler than to watch the sun set over the lake and mountains from way up there? It’s also home to the Grouse Grind Trail, natures natural stair master. Yet after seeing how much trouble I had with Ireland hills, I just might skip that part.

MACMILLAN OBSERVATORY

APPARENTLY on Friday and Saturday evenings between July 1st and Labour day you the observatory’s admission is by donation only. Who wouldn’t want to spend an evening gazing at stars and day dreaming?

CYPRESS PROVINCIAL PARK

According to trip advisor, Cypress park is just minutes from downtown Vancouver, with lots of trails for hiking. It also has a view-point of most of the city, at no cost. (Can you tell I’m the active type?)

WHISTLER MOUNTAIN

One day, I just want to hop on a coach bus from Vancouver city (for roughly $71.00) and see this amazing place. Here you can walk the streets of the Village where gold medalists have made their country proud. There’s also a ziplining adventure tour here, and it’s a new goal of mine to zip-line in as many places as possible… besides, who wouldn’t want to fly through rainforests? Then I can sit by one of Whistler’s blue water lakes and bask in Canada’s beauty.

WHALE WATCHING:

Thousands of whales each year between March and October set forth on their migration through Vancouver’s waters, and there are a handful of different ways to see them. With a choice of tours from kayaks, zodiacs, seaplane or a cruiser, you can have whatever pace that fits your dreams. Since I have yet to see one, I think Kayaking in the water along an Orca would be an experience I couldn’t turn down if I had the chance.

GASTOWN:

Known as Vancouver’s oldest section, Gastown is now kind of the hipster part of Vancouver. As an art kid, this is right up my alley. Its streets are full of bakeries, art galleries, store fronts, and some of the best of the best, all with a Victorian charm. An added bonus (and kind of makes me excited), you can follow a scavenger hunt through the town and if you find everything, you can collect two Gastown passport stamps!! How cool is that?

EAT ALL THE SHUSHI!

No, Seriously. Vancouver – thanks to its high Asian population – is known for it’s cheap but well made sushi. And let’s face it, being from a small city in Southern Ontario where an ocean is over 500 km away, I don’t have easy access to fresh, cheap, delectable sushi. I’ve been wanting sushi ever since I had it in Galway, and I wont settle for anything less than this.

Bring on the seafood coma!

Wanderlist: Boler Mountain in the Summer

After my last zip lining experience, I just want to get out there and do it again but somewhere new with different views. I also have been telling everyone I can about the Eco-Adventures hoping others can have as much fun as I did.

So when a friend told me his Mom read the post and found a place to zip line not far from our hometown, I got excited.

995966_10151549885721566_1937370894_nBoler Mountain, known as London, Ontario’s Skiing and Snowboarding getaway, the area has recently undergone a revamp for summer time, adding an unique thrill among the trees.

Who wouldn’t want to try swinging like Tarzan on a rope going from tree to tree, zip from post to post, and or attempt the swinging bridges? You can even make your way across the pirate nets, almost like those levels in Super Mario. All can be done in the Treetop Adventure Park.

There are also different levels depending on your abilities; junior, beginner, intermediate, advance and full zip; all meant to challenge you not just psychically but mentally as well. The entire package is about three hours long, and will probably require every muscle you have, but it will also get your adrenaline going.  As you reach the end, you will zip across 900 ft of Carolinian Forest, a beautiful ecosystem known in southern Ontario.

The best part is the park is affordable. It’s only 47 dollars for all the courses or 24 dollars if you want to just stick to the junior course. So grab some friends, and enjoy the feeling of being mostly free at the top of the forest. Be one with nature, and all those other cliches you hear about but never really understood until you experience it.

I have personally been to Boler Mountaun during the winter when friends have convinced me to try both Skiing and Snowboarding despite my horrible ability to do anything in the snow. I believe I have rolled down the hills  more than I have glided down them.  So when I heard there were things to do there in the summer that involve climbing, zip lining and not going down a hill with nothing but your own balance I was beyond ecstatic. SIGN ME UP! I yelled. (when I have money…)

London is only 2 hours from Toronto or the US/Windsor border, and has many options for food, board, and entertainment after you finish your adventure. Personally I could drive home after, but I might even stop halfway to Rondeau or Erieau’s beach to enjoy some ice cream along the shores of Lake Erie.

But that’s just me.

Okay I give up. Today I was going to talk about a pilgramage I would love to do just simply for the experience but I have NO information on it other than what my friend has told me. It goes from Samo to Polsi, and it just sounded amazing. But Alas, I have nothing. * sigh * IT WAS GOING TO BE SO COOL!!

But that’s okay! My list is constantly on going so onto another of my wanderlists!!

Wanderlist: Aspromonte Mountain

Let’s face it; everyone wants to go to Italy. There’s the art, amazing food, the golden sun and guys who will take you for a ride on a vespa (or am I confusing that with the Hollywood’s version?)  Yet you always hear about Rome or Sicily or Tuscany, and despite those places being amazing, I want to take a step outside the touristy areas and go enjoy some pure beauty that Southern Italy has to offer; the Aspromonte Mountain.

Located in the province of Reggio Calabria, it is one of the tallest mountains in Italy. The view reminds me of the mountains in the backgrounds of many Italian Renaissance paintings. So naturally as an art historian I want to see this for myself.  For those who have no clue what I’m talking about there are fresh, clear water, lush vegetation and the trees growing out of the rocky terrain look really intense… plus there are wolves, falcons, royal owls and the area is full of archaeological and artistic sites, as well as it has a beach on one side of it and a ski lift on the other.

So if you are ever plan on seeing Italy, I highly recommend going to the Aspromonte Mountain. Just don’t forget your hiking boots!

Wanderlist: Sligo, Ireland

 “Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake”

– Yeats

Sligo, originally meaning Abounding in Shells, is known as the land of heart’s desire and home to W.B. Yeats Grave. It is also a place, from my own opinion, that people rarely have heard of. I consider myself a big fangirl of Ireland and yet I will admit, before today, I have never read its name. I am glad I have now though.

A place of imagination, mythology and energetic lifestyles, Sligo just stands on the edge of magic and reality. Here the beaches are long, the wind is cool and stories of past hero’s have been told for centuries. If you have time I recommend reading about Fionn mac Cumhaill, he’s my favorite Irish hero and a lot of it takes place in what is now Sligo (go figure!)

Just checking out Adventure Sligo’s site, you have a wide selection of activities to do if you want to keep active. Like the water? Try your hand at diving, sailing, surfing, or white-water rafting to name a few.  Prefer the land? Well they have anything from climbing, hiking, horseback riding and even abseiling! (A controlled decent down a cliff/rock face using rope.) How cool is that?

Other activities include mountain walks across the Knocknarea Mountain, which stands at 1,083ft just outside Sligo Town; which in my opinion is the best way to see such an awe-inspiring part of the world.  There is also cycling through the countryside to see things that you would normally miss from the car and walking through the many trails that spread out through the mountains.

The county is also big on Arts and Culture and has monuments just about everywhere, going as far back to 5,000 B.C.E.

It is also home to a network of craft workers called “Made in Sligo” who promote creativity and design. Some of the artists have even won awards at the RDS showcase in 2012 and their group is still growing and promoting the “Sligo Craft Trail” . Their one of a kind art would make the perfect souvenir. (wink wink)

And when you are tired and sore, look no farther because like most of Ireland, food, music and hospitality are just a few steps away. And if you prefer a slower, relaxed pace, I would recommend checking out sligo.ie about other events and attractions.  They have everything!!

Now that I have spent my workshift researching and staring into the images hoping just maybe I can escape into one of them,  Sligo is officially on my list of muse-inspiring places. I just want to go now!

Where else can you climb the Irish mountains, or take a stroll and see just where Yeats stumbled upon the faeries dancing, becoming him to join their otherworld.
